The choice here is entirely up to you, and will often depend on your circumstances or finances.
For example,
Are you a regular visitor to your local gym or fitness centre?
Or do you prefer to exercise at home?
Are you away from home regularly and need a routine without equipment?
Maybe a combination of the above is true also.
If you are a member of a gym or fitness centre then your choice of equipment will either be substantial or limited depending on what’s available there. Also if the gym is busy the actual use of certain machines may be limited at busy times. So always have a backup exercise to do if your normal machine is busy.
However in an emergency it’s always good to have a routine you can do without weights when you’re away from home. Some example routines are in our routines section, along with other exercise for you to create your own or even modify one of ours...
Gym equipment...
Today there are so many variations on various gym equipment types; it’s actually difficult sometimes to understand how they work. But they all follow the same principle. That is to somehow resist a given movement of your body...
This is normally achieved by adding extra weights, tension to a spring or other forms of friction...
If your thinking of buying any equipment remember as a general rule your legs are your biggest muscles so try to buy equipment that gives them a good workout too...
Just like a car, the bigger the engine (muscle) the more energy it consumes...
Having said that, access to a good collection of dumbbells and weights, is desired where possible.
On the Right hand side of this page are links to reliable suppliers of equipment located here in the UK and also in the States. Check them out if your thinking of buying fitness or gym equipment.
When purchasing equipment, as a general rule, look for flexibility of exercises you can do with it. That said we often have to buy a piece of equipment that’s rather specific in its use.
For example a multigym gives a lot of different exercise choices, but a leg press is fairly limited to one or two exercises.
However if we train at home sometimes we have to make do with what’s available, this may be a fully fitted out home gym or fitness centre or absolutely nothing. In the Routines section of this site there are several routines for both situations so by all means take a look there too...
If you want specific advice on buying a particular piece of equipment then by all means contact me on this address and I will get back to you as soon as possible.. meadehere@minukodu.co.uk
No Equipment?
Believe it or not you can get a reasonable workout without any equipment at all. For example if you’re staying in a hotel room or at home and are yet to buy any equipment at all. This is mainly achieved by using your own bodyweight to provide the resistance you need to overcome. A basic example of this is the humble Press-up. This truly is one of the best upper body exercises and should always be done and never neglected even if you do eventually get access to a fully fitted out gym or fitness centre. Just because it’s not done on a fancy machine doesn’t mean it’s not as good. If you do press-ups correctly you will pay your dues with this simple exercise in sweat and tears... As said previously there’s more exercises to study in the Routines section relating to having no equipment available, so see you there….
