Supplements are probably the most difficult subject to write about with any amount of honesty or accuracy. So many adverts will praise the benefits of a particular vitamin, mineral or new compound. My own personal experience here is give a particular product a fair trial and see if it benefits you personally. Be critical in your judgement of a product and only repurchase anything you feel has worked for you. Any wild claims from advertiser’s i.e.  Loose 5 kilo in a week or gain 10 kilos of muscle in 3 days should be judged for what they are: - an attempted con-trick to get you to part with your hard earned money.
That said, if you are on a restricted diet and trying to loose weight or trying to increase your muscle mass then at the very least a good multivitamin and mineral tablet (or liquid) is recommended. I say recommended because, unless you have a lot of time on your hands and a lot of knowledge about what particular vitamins and minerals particular foods contain, most people are just too busy living their lives and use these products to make sure they are getting the minimum requirements in their diet.
You should however try to learn more about the contents of the food you eat. Information is widely available on the internet and some very good books are available. After all do you really trust most food manufacturers to consider your health before their profits?
So educate yourself about food and what’s added to processed food. If we all ate a natural well balanced diet then most supplement companies would go out of business overnight.
But we don’t. We eat mainly for convenience, normally at the wrong times and never consider our energy output that day when we choose our choice of food.

I actually take two different types of supplement, one when I’m trying to gain some muscle and the other when I am trying to loose a little weight. When trying to put on a few kilos of muscle I tend to train hard and eat a lot anyway so during this time I take a good multivitamin. But when trying to loose weight I accept my diet will be restrictive so take other supplements too during this time.
A point to remember with any supplement is that good supplements are generally well priced. So avoid the cheaper products and be dubious about overpriced products too.
